Connection verses Disconnection

Three years ago in May I ventured out on a four day walk called The Green Gully Walk west of Port Macquarie in NSW with two friends. We stayed in huts and walked on undulating tracks for approx 10kms per day. Some of the up and down hills were quite steep as we went through forest, creeks and rivers. We had trained for the walk and had to carry all our gear and food with us.

The first two days we all chatted a lot and then it started to quieten down. This was the moment that we started to connect with our environment. We could hear the birds, the wind rustling the leaves and branches on the trees, hear our foot steps on the ground and it provided an opportunity for stillness, clarity and harmony. It was like we became one with our environment.

On day three we climbed out of a gully and had to walk down a steep ridge. As we got to the top of the ridge, we could see for hundreds of miles. We stopped for lunch and to take in the breathtaking views. The light streamed upon the expansive ridges in front of us.

The mountains are always a happy place for me. They represent solitute, connection to something bigger than us and the reminder that we are a mere speck in the big scheme of life itself. As we started walking down the ridge, I got this feeling that the mountain was happy with us being there. It was steep, but I felt safe. In that moment, I could have simply died and all would have been perfect.

Have you ever felt that way? That connection to the land, ocean, rivers, animals and sky? Sometimes they are fleeting moments, and sometimes they last a while. They can feel profound at times and stay as a strong memory in your life, like this one did for me.

When we strip away the chaos of day-to-day stressors, daily emails, keeping up with the demands of home life, it allows for space to connect to something bigger than ourselves. We are spiritual beings by nature and connecting to something bigger than ourselves fulfils us on a deep level.

It is important to note:

When we are stressed, we are disconnected

When we are anxious, we are disconnected

When we are yelling at other drivers, we are disconnected

When we are on our devices, we are disconnected

So take the time out from your day-to-day life, leave the emails, demands and phone behind and find the space to connect to what feels right to you, wether it be the beach, mountains, or sitting under the stars with a fire. So find the space to breathe fully and allow your intuition to come through so you can connect to something bigger than yourself,
